Lending Policies

Students may borrow circulating and reference books. Reserve materials, periodicals, videos and audio-visual equipment must be used in the library, unless a Librarian approves other arrangements. 

Faculty and staff may borrow circulating books, reference items, videos, and art slides. Reserves and periodicals may be borrowed for a class period, or overnight, with permission of a Librarian.

  • Archive materials may be used in the library. Ask a Librarian for assistance.
  • Electronic resources are freely accessible through the on-campus academic computer network. Off-campus use is available to current SVC students, faculty and staff, using your SVC login credentials.   
  • All borrowing privileges will cease upon withdrawal from the College or termination of employment.

Alumni and community members may use all materials in the library, but may not check them out.

Circulating books and videos can be loaned through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and other reciprocal agreements. The Library Director has the right to deny a loan if an item is overly expensive, irreplaceable, or too new/popular. 

Electronic resources are available for use by individuals outside the SVC community on a walk-in basis. Off-campus use is not permissible as per our licensing agreements with vendors. 

The SVC library holds many course required textbooks. Rules for textbook use are:

  • Textbooks can be checked out for 2 hours.
  • There is no limit to how many textbooks a student may checkout at one time.
  • Textbooks MUST remain in the library so all students have access.
  • Textbooks cannot be taken out overnight.
  • Photocopies or scans may be made from textbooks.

Course reserves are materials that supplement course textbooks which professors ask the library to reserve (hold aside) specifically for their class.  The same rules for textbook use apply to course reserve material.

Renewals are unlimited unless an item has been recalled or a hold has been placed. Renewal periods are subject to the same time limits as original loans (e.g. books for students are still due by the end of the semester.)

Due date reminders and overdue notices are sent automatically from our circulation system to the borrower’s SVC e-mail address. This system will also alert you when holds become available. 

Borrowers may view due dates, renew materials and place holds online. From our card catalog:

Most materials checked out to students do not accrue fines until the final day of classes each semester. (Exceptions: Reserve items and interlibrary loan accrue fines of $1/day.) If a book is not returned by the last day of class the student’s account is billed a replacement fee plus any accrued fines. The replacement fee is either a standard fee (for example, $50 for regular books, $75 for Oversize) or the actual cost of the book, whichever is higher. Interlibrary loan replacement costs are set by the lending library, and often include processing fees as well.

Books checked out to students may be recalled if the student has had them for three weeks or more. Fines for recalled books that are not returned in five days are 50 cents per day, and are not waived. Interlibrary loans and other reciprocally borrowed items are subject to recall at any time. These should be returned within 5 business days, or will be assessed fines at $1 per day. 

Materials borrowed by faculty and staff are subject to recall, but not to fines. 

Interlibrary Loan, VCAL and other local libraries: Our Circulation Policy allows us to share with the larger community by participating in the state-wide Interlibrary Loan network as well as reciprocal borrowing agreements with Bennington College, Bennington Free Library, Williams College Libraries, and the Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries (VCAL). Loan periods for institutions who borrow from us are listed above. Please see our ILL Page for more information about how SVC patrons can borrow items via ILL. 

SVC faculty may visit VCAL libraries and borrow materials as determined by the lending library's policy. Please see here and contact the SVC Library Director for appropriate paperwork.

Faculty members from participating VCAL institutions may borrow from our library. Please visit us between 8am and 5pm on a weekday, and bring a signed VCAL Authorization Form and a borrower's card from your home library. See above for loan periods.

Faculty Reserves Policy and Process

Please fill out our online submission form.

  • If you are putting a library-owned item on reserve, we will find it.
  • If you are providing the material yourself, please bring it to our office or drop it in our box in the Mansion's 2nd floor mailroom.
  • Requests are usually processed within 24 hours.

Keep copyright and library policy in mind:

  • The FAQ below should answer most of your concerns, but feel free to contact a librarian with further questions. 
  • The Fair Use Checklist and the online evaluation tool below are provided to assist you in determining whether your intended use complies with copyright guidelines.

NOTE: Previous textbook purchases were funded by a grant which is now spent. This process has changed from past semesters.

The library currently purchases required textbooks which retail over $100 for spring and fall semesters. Textbooks are made available for in-library use in our Reserve collection. The library does NOT purchase new books for summer, but will make available any that we already own. 


  1. Prior to each semester, the bookstore sets a deadline and reminds faculty to fill out a form to submit textbook requirements. Please DO NOT send requests directly to the library. 
  2. Once the bookstore order is finalized, the library will determine which books we already own, and which of the still-needed books meet our requirement of costing over $100. If a faculty member indicates on the submission form that a book it not needed in the library collection, we will not purchase it, even if it meets our requirements. We purchase used books if possible, but base the "Should we buy it?" decision on the cost of a new book.
  3. Please adhere to deadlines so we can purchase books with enough lead time to have them on the shelves on the first day of the semester. 
  4. If you have a copy of a book we are not purchasing, and you would like to place it on Reserve, please bring it to Sarah or Sara for processing. For these required textbooks, you do NOT need to use our Reserve form. (All other items for Reserve do need to go through that form.)

Other info:

  • We do not purchase multiple copies (except for large courses like EN101/102) but if you'd like to add a desk copy to the collection, you are welcome to do that. See item 4 above. 
  • We run a report at the end of the semester and let you know how often a book for your class was checked out. This may help you with future planning.

Library Space Policies

The primary purpose of Library space is for use by individual walk-in students.

Classes: Instructors may bring classes into the library for group work, but should plan ahead of time with the Library Director. Classes MAY NOT monopolize library computers.

Events: The library may be used during off hours for special events. These should be arranged well in advance with the Library Director, and set up/tear down time should be accounted for when planning around library hours. The faculty or staff person arranging the event is responsible for leaving the space clean, returning furniture to its original place, and securing the library when leaving.

Study Rooms: The library has three study rooms. These rooms are intended for quiet or group study, not for meetings or office hours. They are available on a "first come, first served" basis and may not be reserved. 

Quiet study: We do not have a designated "quiet area". The main reading room is also the reference room, so normal-level conversation should be expected. The computers in the stacks area tend to be more isolated and quiet. Suggestions and comments on this subject are encouraged! Please contact Sarah Sanfilippo with your input. Quiet Hours are enforced after 8pm when classes are in session. 

Tutoring: The Center for Teaching and Learning's tutoring office is housed in the library. This includes the Tutoring Coordinator's office, and a table for use by student tutors. Tutor hours will be posted; if there are no tutoring hours underway, the table may be used by other library patrons.

The library will enforce Quiet Hours between 8pm and 10pm


  • Low volume groups can use a study room in the library. If we can hear you, we’ll let you know and ask you to go upstairs to a classroom. 
  • Short, low volume conversation is allowed. If it’s going to be more than a minute, take it out to the hall. (But remember, we can often still hear you out there!) 
  • Take all phone calls out to the hall. 
  • If we can hear your music outside the headphones, it’s too loud. If you need to borrow headphones, ask at the front desk.
  • Respect student workers if they ask you to comply with these rules.


Looking for help getting into the zone?

  • Disposable earplugs are available at the front desk.
  • Use your own headphones or borrow some of ours. (Plug them into the BACK of the library computers.)
  • Use a noise generator: try myNoise or Noisli 
  • Borrow a reading light so you can sit in one of the darker corners of the library.

Food is allowed in the library.

Drinks with covers are also allowed in the library.

Please do not eat or drink while at the computers.

Posting policy: 

All questions about postings should be directed to the Library Director. 

Only library-related materials are allowed on bulletin boards. We will make exceptions if there is room and the content is appropriate. Posting requests should be brought to the Library Director for approval. Library bulletin boards include:

  • Library entrance
  • Wall above library copier
  • Mansion 2nd floor across from 203

No flyers, brochures, handouts, etc. are allowed on library tables, walls, bookshelves, or windows. If we find them there, they will be removed and recycled.

We WILL work with you to find other ways of promoting events. If appropriate, we can:

  • Spread the word via our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts
  • Create a book display (with your input) to promote an event
  • Post events on our calendar, which shows on our web page
  • Host a collection box for food or clothing drives, etc.
